Alabama Pharmacy Technician 6-Month Training Deadline Explained

The six-month clock starts on the date ALBOP approves your initial pharmacy technician registration, not your hire date. You must complete a board-approved training program or pass a board-recognized certification exam within that window, then submit proof through the Licensure Gateway within 30 days. Missing the deadline can mean allowable sanctions on the technician, the pharmacy, and the supervising pharmacist.
What triggers the six-month deadline
Rule 680-X-2-.14 applies to technicians whose initial registration with the Alabama Board of Pharmacy is dated on or after January 1, 2020. The six-month period begins on your registration date, the day ALBOP puts your pharmacy technician license on file. Your employer's hire date does not start the clock if registration happened later.

What counts as approved training
ALBOP accepts completion of a program on the Board's approved training list, or passing a board-recognized certification exam such as PTCB or ExCPT. Approved programs cover the five required topic areas: legal and ethical standards, professional standards, terminology, calculations, and medication safety.

What happens if you miss the deadline
The Board may impose allowable sanctions on the technician, the employing pharmacy permit holder, and the supervising pharmacist. Current Rule 680-X-2-.14 does not name a dollar fine. Both you and the pharmacy must keep training records for two years.
