PTCB vs ExCPT in Alabama: Do You Need Either One?

You do not need PTCB or ExCPT to start working as a pharmacy technician in Alabama. ALBOP requires registration and board-approved training within six months. Both PTCB (Pharmacy Technician Certification Board) and ExCPT (NHA) are board-recognized exams that satisfy the training requirement if you pass, but most new techs complete an approved program instead. Either exam is optional for career advancement.

Alabama law requires ALBOP registration and completed training (or a passing board-recognized exam). It does not mandate national certification to keep working. Many employers still prefer CPhT from PTCB, especially hospitals.

Finish ALBOP training first with Alabama Pharm Tech ($199). Start working and gain experience. When you want the CPhT credential and higher pay, sit for PTCB or ExCPT after you have the work hours. Do not use the $199 compliance course as exam prep.

No. Certification is not required to renew ALBOP registration. Every registered Alabama technician owes the same Board CE: 6 hours each two-year cycle, including 2 live hours. PTCB CPhT recertification (20 hours every 2 years) is a separate national requirement and does not replace ALBOP CE.
